Dr.Sylvia Alice Earle
Dr. Syliva
Alice Earle has been called "Her Deepness," a "Hero for the Planet" by
Time magazine, and a "Living Legend" by the Library of Congress. I think
of her as a female Jacques Cousteau--if he had been an academic!
I am
disappointed that Dr. Earle is not yet a household name as she has had such
a major impact on the marine biology community and on me in
particular.
A brief glimpse of her many accomplishments in no particular
order:
National
Geographic Explorer in Residence
made the deepest
solo untethered dive of any woman to 1,000 meters
was an "aquanaut"
who lived underwater
for 2 weeks
has led over 60 expeditions worldwide
has logged
over 7000 hours underwater
has been inducted
into the National Woman's Hall of Fame
has been Chief Scientist at the National Oceanic and Atmospheric
Association (NOAA)
has written numerous articles and books, including
Sea Change: A Message of the Oceans
has been named a 2009 TED prize
winner
please help her (and the oceans) to create more Marine Protected
Areas around the world!
